My plan is to post on occasion my observations and ruminations concerning the Alumni House Garden. The series is entitled “Garden Walks” because the remarks will inevitably be based on what I observe and think about during and after my daily walks in the garden. Given that I am not a professional gardener and have had no prior experience with most of the plants residing in this garden, I suspect these postings will become primarily a record of my struggles in self-education as I try to understand this half acre of soil and the plants (and other organisms) that live here. Since I began working in this garden in April of 2014, I have often wondered about the history of this garden–what has been planted and what were the reasons for those choices. Although I am composing these little essays primarily for my own benefit–to force myself to ruminate on my own experiences–perhaps these postings will eventually be of interest to future Alumni House gardeners. Only time will tell.
