2018 Garden Walks |
December 2018 Garden Photos
Most of these photos were taken on a December morning when the garden was covered with frost. Except for two photos of the steel sphere Sisyphus, most are intimate shots of leaves, seed pods, a few hardy sedum--which look surprisingly spry and energetic on this chilly morning.

November Garden Photos 2018
This collection of photographs taken in early November concentrates on several varieties of seed heads, particularly those left as a potential food source for birds visiting the garden in the fall or winter. The slide show also features some of the 3,000 bulbs (crocus, tulips, fritillaria, wolfs bane, and allium) planted over a ten-week stretch in October, November, and December.

October Garden Photos 2018
Most of the photos in this slideshow were taken on two mornings in the second week of October. We had not yet had a freeze (or even any close calls), and the garden was still in its prime fall season display.

September Garden Photos 2018
These photos were taken on several mornings in the middle of September. Many of the garden's flowers were rejuvenated by recent rains and cooler weather.

Daylilies in July 2018
One of the high points of the garden year is in July when most of the daylilies in collusion with the purple coneflowers are in full bloom. This year we had over 40 different daylilies flowering at the same time, creating an entertaining riot of color as the various hemerocallis competed for attention. This slideshow shares 30 daylily-focused photos from two early morning walks on July 15 and 16.

Garden Photos: Middle of May, 2018
These photos are from two morning walks around the garden in the middle of May. While looking through these images, I was particularly struck by how much in the garden has come and gone in such a brief period of four weeks. ~Bob

Garden Photos: My Favorites from April and May, 2017
Since the arrival of spring has experienced some delays this year, I thought it would be refreshing to recall last year's spring garden. Here are 40 of my favorite photos from April and May 2017. While many of these photos are are recycled from previous Garden Walks, several are making their first website appearance. ~Bob

Garden Photos in March: Before and During March 23-24 Snowfall 2018
My original plan for this slideshow was to record evidence of new growth (e.g., emerging hellebores, tulips, and daffodils) while also celebrating seeds and foliage that had survived through the winter. The early spring snow event, however, motivated me to grab my camera and take a few photos while the snow was still falling. This collection thus became a mixture of photos of the garden during the first week of spring on two different mornings, producing quite different results. ~Bob

Walking on Gozo
In February, my wife and I did a one-week walking trip on Malta and Gozo, two small islands located south of Sicily in the Mediterranean. Most of the photos in this slideshow were taken with my little Canon Rebel camera while on a 10-kilometer hike around the northeast corner of Gozo. We had a perfect day (sunny, moderate breeze, temperature about 50) for our walk through this rural landscape, the blue Mediterranean always on the horizon. Most of the photos are focused on blooming flowers and trees. There's no guarantee my species identifications are 100% accurate, but I was helped immensely by a wonderful website: http://www.maltawildplants.com/maltawildplants.html ~Bob

Snow Photos in January 2018
As I wrote in last week's Monday Morning report, we never had a satisfying, long-lasting snow cover in 2017. This year, however, the arctic temperatures have ensured there would be no quick desecration of the snow-covered landscape. The thick layer of whiteness accentuates the space’s fundamental integrity. In these conditions the garden acquires an attractive minimalism, a clarity in proportions and structure not so readily evident in the summer. Reduced to winter’s limited palette of colors, the garden feels distilled, enhanced, unencumbered by the other seasons’ extravagances–somehow sanctified. These black and white photos, taken in early January, attempt to capture some of that pristine minimalism. ~Bob
