As was true in April, I find myself at the end of May and have not yet finished this month’s blog post. One excuse is that this year’s spring weather has been too nice for sitting in my garden studio office, staring at my computer screen, occasionally typing new sentences, occasionally revising and editing those sentences to make more new sentences. Another excuse, one that goes back decades, is that it’s always been hard for me to start a new draft and even harder to finish. I’m reminded of attending a national writing conference, perhaps 30 years ago, and listening to John McPhee talk about how he hated writing. He described how as a young writer he would tie himself to his chair, making it difficult to leave his desk and do something more pleasurable. Perhaps I need to tie myself down. In my defense, I will point out that in the last few weeks I have drafted and/or revised at least five different essays. God willing, sooner or later, I’ll finish one of them and get it posted, perhaps the one that talks about planting potatoes. ~Bob
